Take your photography to a new level with a special weekend workshop in Colorado’s most spectacular mountain valley. Led by award winning photographers Bill Gillette and Jim Havey the weekend includes lectures, individual instruction & critiques, and rare shooting opportunities with western models and livestock against the inspiring backgrounds of historic Westcliffe, CO and the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Refresh your creative eye and technical skill while capturing the life and landscapes of the old west in stunning images.

2:00 — 3:30 PM • Fast Start for Digital Beginners
Includes instruction on manual camera operations and creative controls
using aperture, shutter & ISO settings

4:00 — 6:00 PM • Opening Lectures

Saturday, July 27th

Car pools from hotel are available, juice, coffee, fruit & pastries (included),
field instruction, photograph wranglers with horses & scenery
(workshop participants will not ride horses)

10:00 — 12:00 PM • Lightroom Class at Lamp Post Lodge
Digital image management, editing & postproduction

12:00 — 2:45 PM • Free Time
Download & edit, review morning shots, self-directed photography in
town and around valley (jazz concert in park, street ensembles & scenics),
scout valley locations for self-directed Sunday morning shooting, recharge
batteries, camera & yourself
lunch on your own

3:00 — 5:30 PM • Merfeld Artist Studio & Property
Instruction & practice,
portraits with western models,
landscapes, wildflowers & still lifes
creative use of available light, reflectors & strobes

EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES

Required Photo Equipment

  • DSLR body or bodies with interchangeable lenses
  • Zoom range capability with one or more lenses covering 24-200mm
  • Batteries, charger & at least 2 batteries
  • At least 2 digital memory cards 8 GB or higher each

Recommended Photo Equipment

  • UV or similar protective filter for your lenses
  • Tripod or monopod
  • Digital card reader
  • Laptop computer
  • Lens cleaning cloth

Optional Photo Equipment

  • Flash/Speed Light

Clothing

  • Hat… very important as sun is rather intense at this altitude.
  • Pants… jeans or similar tough pants to avoid cactus & yuccas.
  • Jacket/Poncho… for wind & rain… mornings & evenings can be in the 50s
  • Boots… high top over-the-ankle hiking boots are best, or cowboy boots if accustomed to them. Moderate walking and lots of standing so comfort is key.

OTHER

  • Daypack or similar to hold extra clothing, camera stuff and water
  • Workshop will furnish bottled water • Very important to hydrate
  • Power bars or snacks
  • Sunscreen (30+ rating)
  • Insect repellent (optional)
  • Towels or other soft cloths for wiping cameras and gear
